Art and Design
At The Elms, we believe every child is an artist in their own right. As pupils move through the school, their creativity is nurtured and celebrated, with a strong focus on developing core artistic skills across a wide range of media and styles. From sketching and sculpture to printmaking and mixed media, children are encouraged to experiment, think independently and solve problems with originality and flair. Our art curriculum is designed to inspire confidence and adaptability, with pupils’ work proudly displayed throughout the school — reflecting both traditional techniques and contemporary expression. Every child’s unique artistic voice is valued and championed.
Inspiring Classics
Pupils explore the works of great artists and of major art movements and cultures. They then learn to mimic their techniques as a way to build their skills, and inspire their own creative journeys.
Expanding Horizons
Visiting galleries gives Elms children the chance to experience art first hand, so sparking inspiration and broadening their understanding of different styles and cultures,
Designing with a Purpose
In Design and Technology, pupils enjoy designing and constructing practical items. Whether bulding wooden toys or household objects, they advance their problem-solving skills, creativity and hands-on confidence.
Building Skills
Through engaging, hands-on projects, pupils develop key Design and Technology skills such as woodworking, measuring, sawing, joining and finishing. This allows them to turn their ideas into practical objects with increasing independence and skill.
Mixed Media
Children create bold, imaginative and original artworks by experimenting with mixed media. They learn to combine paint, collage, fabric and other objects in creative and exciting ways.
Immersive Art
Pupils experience creativity in exciting, multi-sensory ways when visiting immersive art exhibitions — stepping into artworks, exploring fresh perspectives, and sparking imagination beyond the classroom.

Our mission is to help children find their own artistic voice and take pride in what they create. From bold painting and clay work to three dimensional design challenges and mixed media, every lesson is an invitation to play with ideas and develop confidence through doing. More than just skills, we aim to nurture a lasting passion for creativity — a spark that stays with pupils well beyond their time at school.
