Art, Design & Technology

The teaching of Art at The Elms has the twin goals of equipping our children with the foundation skills to participate in the Visual Arts, either as practitioners or as confident consumers. There is a strong emphasis on observation and imaginative drawing skills and visual literacy is enhanced by colour theory and practise as well as lively study of Arts and Artists.

The curriculum also includes painting, printmaking and sculpture. We have visits to local and regional art venues, often with workshops to increase experience of making and appreciation.

Talented pupils can join the Art Scholar's Programme that starts in their penultimate year.

We have an Art Gallery which is used for pupil's exhibitions as well as exhibitions and workshops by professional artists and craftspeople.

We want every child to leave with an 'Educated Eye' and a life long enthusiasm for the Visual Arts.

At the Elms, pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make effective products. In Design and Technology pupils use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments, while learning to think creatively as individuals and members of a team to solving problems.

The Design and Technology pupils experience at The Elms involves resistant materials, graphic products, electronics, structures, mechanisms and textiles. Current projects include designing and making an electronic colour changing night light in Year Four, using computer aided design and manufacture in Year Five to produce a pocket game and making a model of their ideal bedroom in Year Six.
